Have any of you looked at the high-end portable
Garmins lately? I've been out of General Aviation for
about 25 years and have been re-educating myself on
the latest technology in anticipation of buying a
small plane. You can now buy a Garmin that's hooked
up to XM radio that will give you moving map display,
terrain warnings, and weather overlay. Move it from
the plane, to the boat, to the car - no problem. They
are still a bit expensive (about $2500) but the price
will keep coming down. If you don't need the terrain
features (like on a boat) you can knock about a grand
off the price. I sail in an FM radio challenged area
and already use XM on the boat, a real value for the
money. The weather overlay function would be useful
in the air/on the water/and in your car. Oh yea, you
can listen to Howard Stern while you're trying to beat
the storm!
