Richard,

I think it is easier to back in a R22 then back out. Coming in I have enough 
boat speed to easily steer in reverse. If you come in hot head on, reverse 
isn't going to help much. If you do manage to come in to fast in reverse 
braking with forward prop actually works. Backing in also makes it easier 
for me to head out especially if it is really blowing hard. Lastly backing 
in protects the outboard from would be pirates. To each his own. :-)
