Tom,
I do the exact opposite of Rummy, as I lower towards the stern.  All his
other cautions are applicable no matter which way you go.  I don't have time
to detail my method right now, but will dig up the old email where I
described it.  I will agree with Bill that raising and (for me) lowering the
mast are potentially the most dangerous and nerve racking things about the
boat.  I've gotten better about it after half a dozen times, but it's still
enough that I'm overjoyed when I accomplish the task at the beginning and
end of every year.  I've never used Stan's mast hoist, but I hear it's well
worth it if you can swing it.
