Dave, keep in mind the lowly fender board. A 2x6 slung over the side (backed with a few cylindrical inflatable fenders on the boat side) will handle situations where you have to tie up next to pilings, and may be a necessary permanent fixture in some inexpensive or rough slips. /Bob Skinner
