[Rhodes22-list] RE: rudder overhaul

  Todd,
  The bolt shown in my photo will be shaved flush to the inside of the 
backing plate to allow the rudder to pivot.  I did not see enough 
"meat " left on the inside of my  aluminum plates to countersink 
anything.  Basically, I am adding more grip for the larger 5/16 
fastener for the lower outboard pintle.  The skeg had so much rot 
there is plenty of space for these backing plates.  Roger also 
recommended to  me that I epoxy the ss backing plate to the aluminum 
to help separate the two metals.  The machining time was minimal and 
I do believe it will make the pintle connection stronger.  As I said, 
these plates are obviously very used and original materials from 
1981, and they will need to be replaced in a few years of  saltwater 
use.
