[Rhodes22-list] Standard main rigging/ roller furling boom

Thanks Michael'
We've been doing everything you suggest below for years, except for the fastpin suggestion. I assume that this would insert into the mast at the top end of the slide cut out and could be inserted after the main is raised and removed when furling. No predrilled holes in ours however. Wonder if a 2" machine screw with a hex head which wouldn't fall out when boat is pitching would be a good choice?
Our poptop's mast end is secured via an original equipment fixed plastic block on the mast which takes a 1/4 inch threaded bolt secured by a wing nut. Stan's invention no doubt.
If you are sailing an' 81 model, I'll bet it was fabricated in the old N. Babylon plant on New Jersey Ave. as ours was. Stan and Rose delivered it on a Triad trailer to us upstate and overnighted at our house.
One thought re boom height though. We replaced our main 3 years ago with a new one from Lee Sails in Hong Kong; just sent them their serial number from our old original sail and it was supposed to be cut to exact same measurements. However, fabric is entirely different and I wonder if it stretches slightly causing boom to ride slightly lower, brushing top of raised poptop. Could be?

P.S. The last time I was in Kings Park was in '62 visiting a mental patient in the hospital. Is the facility still there and in use?

  Alan,

We have always liked having the poptop in the up position since standing
room in the cabin/galley was one of the main attractions way back in 1980
when we looked at the Rhodes 22. It is common for crew and mate to stand in
cabin while under sail - handy for retrieving gear or beverages as well.
If your boom hits the poptop while sailing then several items may need to be
checked. Most importantly you need to haul the sail up fully (head into the
wind and slack main sheet, first) which will tend to lift the boom slightly.
Second, you may need to place a fastpin in the mast (there should be a pair
of holes already there) to keep the boom from sliding down, causing the boom
to "lay" on the poptop. Lastly, make sure that the poptop slide is properly
engaged in the upper position stop. I also use a fastpin through the mast
below the poptop slider to secure the poptop so that the front does not fall
  during rough seas.

As far as the LI geography, the Nissequogue River empties into the LI Sound
at Kings Park (north shore), not the Great South Bay (south shore.)

Yes, there's quite a story to the name mostly about how we crewed the first
years (trailering), best told at sea, over a beer.

Do you ever get down to the island? Let me know when you are in town.

  Mike
