VHF Hand-held Radio Aids in Offshore Rescue

Thursday, August 23, 2007

NEWPORT BEACH - Having a VHF hand-held radio aboard saved the day for the
crew of a 26-foot sailboat that suffered gear malfunctions and became lost
in severe fog about 45 miles off Newport Beach.
While the crew's original calls for assistance failed to reach the Coast
Guard, they managed to successfully reach assistance-towing dispatchers at
Vessel Assist. According to the company, the calls were received by its VHF
dispatch network, which consists of a series of elevated high-power radio
towers along the coast.

After a three-hour search and rescue attempt for the missing sailboat by
both the Coast Guard and Vessel Assist, they made headway in the search when
they were able to pinpoint the VHF tower that was receiving the signal - in
Malibu. "They were a needle in the haystack of ocean swells," said Shawn
Landin the center's assistant manager. The VHF towers were able to help in
the search. "It narrowed it down to about 100 square miles."

Ultimately, the search teams were able to pinpoint the location of Blew By
You by the help of direct communication with the Coast Guard and the
sailboat, and the help of a few visual cues from by a passing freighter and
a good Samaritan.

Blew By You's skipper received medical attention for a minor head injury
sustained from the boat's boom, prior to the rescue. The skipper remained
aboard for the 45-mile tow back to Marina del Rey.

   Dan,
If you find yourself in this position, you'll wish you had the extra range
of a fixed unit with the antenna on the mast. You would probably pay
anything for one at that point.
