[Rhodes22-list] To Ron Lipton

1. I sail on Lake Michigan, which can get pretty rough. I have mostly been
happy
with the power provided with the 6, although there are a few occasions when
I would have liked the additional power I had with my old 9.9 Mercury.
I chose the smaller engine primarily because of the weight (both boat
balance and my back). I am usually not in a hurry and don't use the motor
until I am almost in the harbor.

2. I don't think that the idle speed is faster with the larger motor, in
fact I
think the 9.9 was a bit slower at idle. This may be due to the 6 being
overpropped
as Jerry mentioned.

3. The 4 stroke 6 is definitely quieter than the 2 stroke 9.9. However the
single cylinder
motor has significant vibration. But it is pretty quiet.

4. I have the long shaft, the 6hp motor responds much more to variations in
depth caused by
waves than the 9.9 did. It will tend to race and then time a few seconds to
go back to
normal rpms. That is one disadvantage of the 6 in bigger water. I don't
see how the
short shaft would work in significant waves without almost dunking the
engine in the water.
I would say the racing of the 6 at high speed in waves is the primary
disadvantage of the motor
with respect to the performance of the 9.9.
