Rory:

On other sailboats it is common to use ordinary plastic covered foam around
the companion way hatch. I recommend climbing inside and closing lid to see
actual thickness of gap. Then you will be to better judge the thickness of
the needed Plastic foam seal.

Some thinner thicknesses are readily available from Home Depot or Lowes. I
would start at front of Laz and go around back to front in single loop,
lapping at front.

This sounds like too much to be coming in from around laz door itself. Have
you done the hose examination while in laz to make sure? Are you absolutely
certain some is not coming in around floor drain of cockpit?

Why not bring your boat to Rummy, he is the greatest for climbing into the
laz.
