[Rhodes22-list] Look MOM "no hands"

I have been able to trim my rhodes to sail hands free when sailing close hauled in varying conditions (wind speed not so much with widely varying direction). The trick is to get the boat sailing on a perfect close hauled course with both sails trimmed perfectly. Find the helm position that will sail a straight line (this is where wind speed variance causes problems) then move the helm slightly to bring you toward the wind. Loosen the mainsheet so it stalls well before the head sail does. Open book, grab beer and watch her sail. The goal is to have the boat Hunt towards the wind and stall the main about once a minute. With the headsail full of air and the main stalled the boat will get pushed back downwind and then the cycle gets repeated - book gets read, beer and skipper get drunk. Most people know this trick but for those who didn't you can thank me next time you have a long upwind sail in winds 3 to 10.
