Big Al,

A couple of thoughts:
1) I would sail with the centerboard all the way down.
2) You don't throw the tiller over hard and fast. This scrubs hull speed.
Practice doing it several ways until you find the correct combination ( a good
feel ) for the wind and seas. There is a point where you can maintain maximum
hull speed and still bring the bow through the wind and waves.
3)Your inability to tack is a direct result of loss of hull speed. One of
the things many inexperienced sailors do is to let the genoa free either early
or to late. Again, timing is everything and you will get better with practice.

Practice makes perfect.

Rummy
