Owch! Depending on how smashed up it is--necks can be broken, joints can be
split-- but in the right hands miracles can happen. It's always worth a
try. When you look at these fine violins, they seem to look back at you.

When I was a kid, I played the cello. I was 10 and carrying my cello on my
back, riding my bike to the spring concert and crashed my bike and smashed
the school-owned cello. It was concert night and I even had a solo! I was
all dressed up and arrived at school dishevelled and with a broken cello.
There were no other instruments available so I was ASOL and the second chair
guy got to play MY solo, dammit! (But that second chair guy grew up to be a
GREAT cellist while I switched over to the trumpet. Mark and I are still
friends to this day.)

The average professional violinist pays about the same for his instrument as
he pays for his house; and about the same for his bow as he would his car.
Insurance too. In this instance, he should have paid more for a better
case. For three or four hundred dollars you can have a case that's pretty
much bullet-proof. What was he thinking?

Do see the movie "The Red Violin" Even if you're not an aficionado of fine
violins. Wonderful movie. Great soundtrack.
