I would think the length of the pole might depend somewhat on the size  
of the genny.  If you've got the big 175, you might need 12' to get it  
poled out far enough.

Also, a 12' pole only extended to 8' is going to be inherently stiffer  
than a fully extended 8' pole.  The overlapping sections will give it  
much more strength.  I think in all cases, the lighter poles are going  
to be most vulnerable to failure when fully extended.
