Here is a picture of my 1987 IMF when I had it apart. The two discs keep
the tube centered in the mast and there is a single disc at the top. The
lower discs are attached to the slide that slides in the slot in the
mast which holds its position in the high or low position on the mast.
The rectangle piece holds the tube in vertical position while the if
free to rotate in the center of the discs.  I don't recall any excessive
noise. The cables and wires in the mast might slap a little with normal
rocking when you're on the water. There are solutions for the slapping
noise.
