I just saw that Northern Tool has a 15 watt solar panel on sale for 69.00.
Don’t really know the quality of it but will take a gamble for 69.00.

Bob:

That's good to know. If I can afford it I would like to add the tiller
pilot and will hold off on the charger. Someone posted the enclosed pdf some
time ago that I think shows a pretty clean installation for the tiller
pilot.

The solar panels on defender that look similar to what is on my R22 appears
to provide about 3 Watts divided by 12volts = .25 amps x 6 hours of strong
sunlight might provide about 1.5 amps per day for each panel or 3.0 amps
total for both. This might help answer Caesar's question about capacity.

Chris,

I have two bateries and two solar panels also, although my batteries are
cabled together and run in series instead of one for starting and one for
charging. The outboard charges both batteries when running. I have an
autopilot plus all the electronics anyone could use - GPS, wind instrument,
depth finder, stereo etc. I never have to use a separate battery charger
and my batteries have never run low. I have two group 29 batteries from
Wal-Mart.

provided for my 2009 boat. I have two solar panels, one port and one
starboard, and two batteries, one house and one starter. I keep my battery
switch to both while at the slip so that the two panels trickle charge both
batteries. 2009 was my first season sailing and I don't have a battery
charger and didn't need one during my 30 or so day sails and 6 overnight
trips. I don't use too much power and find that the solar panels combined
with my 20 minutes of outboard charging in and out of the harbor provides
keeps my batteries in pretty good shape. Ultimately I would like to add a
tiller pilot and at that point might want a charger and xantrax battery
monitor but that's not in this year's budget.
