[Rhodes22-list] Rhodes Solar Panel Make Capacity// battery selector settings

Hi all

I had two solar panels installed by Stan in 2009. I have been under the
impression that the solar panels are wired direct to each of the
batteries. One solar panel is wired to battery #1 and the other panel is
wired to battery #2. If that is the case shouldn't the battery selector
be placed in the "off"position. That would allow each battery to be
charged and prevent one bad battery from draining a good battery. I had
an older battery and a new battery on my boat. What selector position
do other people use?

Now I have a one year old battery and I plan to buy a new one of the
same make and model for the second battery. Should I do this? Or should
I buy two batteries? I have read the batteries should be identical and
the same age.

I keep my battery switch to both while at the slip so that the two panels trickle charge both batteries. 2009 was my first season sailing and I don't have a battery charger and didn't need one during my 30 or so day sails and 6 overnight trips. I don't use too much power and find that the solar panels combined with my 20 minutes of outboard charging in and out of the harbor provides keeps my batteries in pretty good shape. Ultimately I would like to add a tiller pilot and at that point might want a charger and xantrax battery monitor but that's not in this year's budget.
