[Rhodes22-list] availability of 130% genoas

I've been thinking along the same lines... Would be nice to have both
foresails mounted on furlers. I think that's called a Solent rig now.
Difference between Solent and Cutter seems to be spacing of the two
forestays (Cutter being much farther apart with inner forestay carrying
a smaller sail. The Solent rig was supposed to let you carry a 100%
working jib and a larger genoa and use them in combination sailing off
the wind. On the wind the Solent rig becomes unbalanced and harder to
manage with too much drive ahead of the mast. With a cutter rig, not so
much. Although you could add a bowsprit to increase the spacing, that
will also move the center of effort even farther forward and make the
balance problem worse. You could combat that by furling BOTH head
sails, but begins to sound like work!

I think it was Mary Lou that had a good solution to this - mounting the
UPS on a luff wire behind the forestay (and removable) although you can
still furl the UPS on its wire. Or unshackle and stow... do I remember
that right?

Go with the 130 in medium to heavy air, or when you want to point as high as possible; and put up the UPS in lighter air. Maybe use both together when running downwind? I wonder if they could both be used simultaneously like a cutter rig (though probably not enough room between the luffs, has anyone tried to do that)? Hmm. Maybe add a bowsprit and put the UPS at the end of it. But now we are messing with Stan's boat design which should not be done.
