[Rhodes22-list] Trailer

I've had a 2 axle trailer for 10 years. I'm very happy with it. The single
axle trailer I got with the boat , most likely 22 years old then, wasn't
quite as stout as the ones built now,so it may not be a fair comparison
,but...
The single had to have the boat loaded almost all the way forward on the
trailer to keep enought tongue weight on the tow vehicle to keep it from
fishtailing at high speeds and when hitting big bumps. The two axle was
not so sensitive to this condition. This may not be so true now, others feel
free to chime in.
I think to two axle trailer smoothes out the potholes, since only 25% of
the rubber is in a pothole at a time, unless it's a really big hole. The
brakes only have to work half as hard, since there are twice as many. Tires
only have half as much load on them.
These last opinions helped me to decide to go two axle. I was towing with
a Toyota 4-runner, with a 5000 lb tow limit. The rhodes and trailer and
all the stuff we pile in it,is dancing right around that figure, if not
Stomping all over it. I figured the two axle would help compensate for a
lighter tow vehicle. Twice I've had to lock up all 8 wheels in panic
stops, once ending up inches off the bumper of the car in front of me. I'm
certain that I would have been meeting the local enforcement, had I been
pulling the single axle.
I don't see maneuverability as an issue, it's not that much different. In
my case,>5000 miles towing and<1/2 mile tight turning.
Some other things I like about it are with a fender covering two
wheels,it's long enought to be of help when setting up and tearing down
and filling the water tank. One real biggie is being able to unhook the
rig and not have to block up the back end to be able to walk anywhere on
the boat without the front of the boat (trailer tongue jack) becoming
airborne. There has to be less stress on the trailer frame with more axles
One thing I wonder is which unit would promote the best gas mileage , any
thoughts on that?
