Has anyone seen a device that uses E-ink for navigation? Its the black and white screen used on the original NOOK e reader. Perfect visibility during the day with great grayscale for images and just needs a small led light to see at night.

That said, it can be somewhat difficult if it's really really bright at the right angle to sun. However, all things considered I find the trade off well worth it. I tend to use the Bimini if it's really sunny.

It can also act as a repeater using a wifi connection by transferring NMEA data over TCP/IP. In other words to can connect to other boat instruments like autopilot, AIS, speed, wind, and depth. Obviously, this isn't something we use on our small boats, but you could if you really want to. It's the full featured option and runs about $50 in the App Store.

Now the question is, do you want wifi only or an iPad that has wifi and cellular data (4G LTE) as well. The latter has a built in GPS while the former will require a separate GPS device like a Bad Elf and Garmin GLO. These little devices give your wifi only iPad a GPS capability using Bluetooth. I've found my Garmin Glo to be highly accurate and I hear great things about the Bad Elf gizmo as well.
