Bob:I do not have a trailer either.  I do it in water from my dock.  It helps to have the boat broadside to the dock.  Also, Stan's tip about taping the back stays to your back rails really helps keeping the wires out of the water (not to tight).  Also make sure all of the stays and shrouds are free and untangled
